FAQ:

Many of the questions I've received over the years are covered in the book "Breaking into the Art World". This page is for questions that have come up since the book has been published.

Chapter Five - Working as a Street Artist:
Q: Did you need a vender's permit to set up on the street?

A: No. A vender's permit allows you to set up and sell on public owned property (city property). The locations that I set up at where all private properties. The town I live in use to give out vender's permits years ago, but won't give them out anymore. This is often the case in many cites or towns. The store owners along the busy tourist areas pay a large amount of money each month for rent to be in the best places ( location, location, location ). They complained to the city that people with vender permits were setting up in the sidewalk and selling basically the same items they carry in their stores, and they were. It wasn't fair that they paid thousands for the location per month and street venders only payed about $50. to set up and sell the same thing.

I have had many people ask me if they can set up next to me and just sell stuff, I've had many try to get the same kind of agreement with the store owners and property owners that I have, but the store owners and property owners won't let them set up. The difference is this; I am a performing artist, I provide a service to the plaza by painting and drawing attention to the area. They only want to sell stuff, which makes them no different than the venders who are already renting the spaces in the plaza.

If you set up on public property and sell your art and you don't have a vender's permit, you should expect to get a ticket by the local law inforcement. And, if you only want to sell and not paint or draw while on location, don't expect store owners and property owners to see the value in letting you set up on their property.

I have had locations that didn't work out because there were stores nearby on adjacent properties that complained about me being set up, they sold art prints also, so I had to move on to a different location.

Chapter Ten - The Equipment:

The Epson 2200 is now the old news. You can still buy one from Epson that is "Refurbished", and there may be some available in stores, but the latest and greatest in the Photo Stylus Series is the Epson Stylus® Photo R2400. I am purchasing it now to replace my 2200.

You can view the R2400 on the Epson web site:
www.Epson.com

Chapter Fourteen - Presentation:

Q: Where can I order the small plexiglas Art Print Display Bins online?

A: Here is one source that I found online and they have all the standard sizes for the different size prints. ( If the photo of the display bin doesn't show on the web page, you can download their catalogue (PDF file) and view a drawing of it there. ) www.Artessentials.com
